Renate Jacobs en de De Magic Bus

The Magic Bus & other storiesIn 1974 Renate Jacobs and her two daughters took the bus from Amsterdam to Athens. The bus she and her fellow travellers took was called the Magic Bus. It was a colourful way to ride trough Europe with an altered state of mind. This is just one of the stories about how travel and life are entangled in the artistic practice of Renate Jacobs (Amsterdam, 1947).
Having studied anthropology in Amsterdam, Jacobs was involved with the arts from an early age. Modelling for painters and photographers went hand in hand with making sculptures and collecting fabrics and artworks. She lived in many places, for example on the remote Great Barrier Island in the Pacific, yet remained connected with the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood by an invisible thread, always returning and living there now.
The RONGWRONG presentation tries to show how Jacobs’ practice is connected with her life’s stories and the objects and artworks she encountered through friendship and travel. Moreover during the exhibition we will invite three authors to engage in a dialogue with the artist and react to some of the stories.

De Magic Bus & andere verhalen

In 1974 namen Renate Jacobs en haar twee dochters de ​​bus van Amsterdam naar Athene. De bus die zij en haar reisgenoten namen werd de Magic Bus genoemd. Het was een kleurrijke manier om door Europa te rijden met een veranderde gemoedstoestand. Dit is slechts één van de verhalen over hoe reizen en leven zijn verstrikt in de artistieke praktijk van Renate Jacobs (Amsterdam, 1947).
Jacobs studeerde antropologie in Amsterdam en was op jonge leeftijd betrokken bij de kunsten. Model staan voor schilders en fotografen ging hand in hand met het maken van sculpturen en het verzamelen van stoffen en kunstwerken. Ze woonde op vele plaatsen, bijvoorbeeld op het afgelegen Great Barrier Island in de Stille Oceaan, maar toch bleef ze door een onzichtbare draad met de Nieuwmarktbuurt verbonden, keerde ze er altijd terug en woont ze er nu.
De RONGWRONG presentatie probeert te laten zien hoe Jacobs praktijk is verbonden met de verhalen van haar leven en de objecten en kunstwerken die ze tegenkwam door vriendschap en reizen. Bovendien zullen we tijdens de tentoonstelling drie auteurs uitnodigen om een dialoog met de kunstenaar aan te gaan en te reageren op een aantal van de verhalen.
